The Indus River Dilemma: The Future of Sindh.

The residents of Sindh have launched protests because the federal government intends to build six new canals.

According to the Green Pakistan Initiative.

Indus River water will be redirected through these canals to enable corporate farming within the Cholistan desert in South Punjab which has raised serious concerns about decreasing water availability in Sindh.

The decrease in Indus River flow due to climate change together with upstream water diversion has already surfaced while experts predict this will severely impact Sindh’s water supply.

Sindh has consistently dealt with water allocation problems during different seasons because its water supply ranges from 15% to 40% short but Punjab receives higher quantities.

The water rights dispute has been revived through this canal project and it has generated extensive resistance from various political and social and religious factions within Sindh.

The situation emphasizes an immediate requirement for equitable sustainable water governance because the project poses a risk to the agricultural sector along with environmental health and the local economy in Sindh.
