The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a drought alert as Pakistan recorded 40% less rainfall from September 1, 2024, to March 21, 2025. Sindh experienced the highest shortfall at 62%, followed by Balochistan at 52%, Punjab at 38%, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at 35%.
The drought severely impacts agriculture, which contributes nearly a quarter of the country’s GDP and employs 37% of its workforce. Water shortages in the Tarbela and Mangla dams have worsened, while some southern regions have faced over 200 consecutive dry days.
Analysts warn that climate change, population growth, and poor resource management are exacerbating the crisis. Though recent rains improved conditions in central and northern regions, Sindh, southern Balochistan, and eastern Punjab remain affected.
The PMD cautions that drought conditions could worsen, increasing risks for food security and water scarcity in vulnerable areas.
