Pakistan’s democracy ranking dropped six places in 2024, placing it among the 10 worst-performing countries, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Democracy Index
. The report assesses 165 states and two territories based on electoral process, government functioning, political participation, political culture, and civil liberties. Pakistan ranked 124th with a score of 2.84, categorizing it under authoritarian rule.
The global decline in democracy is attributed to worsening conditions in authoritarian regimes, with 39.2% of the world’s population now living under such governance. Currently, 60 countries are classified as authoritarian.
