According to modern physics, four fundamental forces exist in nature. One of these forces is electromagnetic interaction
. Another is weak interactions, which are responsible for the beta decay of nuclei.
While at Imperial College, physics laureate Abdus Salam hypothesised that electromagnetic and weak nuclear forces might be expressions of a single force. Salam’s theory predicted that weak interaction manifests in “neutral weak currents” when certain elementary particles interact.
This was later confirmed. Salam shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics “for their contributions to the theory of the unified weak and electromagnetic interaction between elementary particles, including, inter alia, the prediction of the weak neutral current.”
