Mangla Dam has reached its dead level of 1050 feet, causing the suspension

Pakistan’s Mangla Dam has reached its dead level of 1050 feet, causing the suspension of hydroelectric power production.

A WAPDA spokesperson confirmed that the dam is at its minimum operating level, with water storage at 72,000 acre-feet. The Jhelum River inflow is 19,800 cusecs, while outflow is 19,900 cusecs.

Tarbela Dam is just two feet above its dead level, while Chashma Barrage is only one foot above. The severe water shortage threatens not only power generation but also agriculture and drinking water supply.

Experts warn that Pakistan’s reliance on hydroelectric power makes it vulnerable to such shortages, especially during peak demand seasons.

They emphasize the need for sustainable water management, conservation strategies, and energy diversification through solar and wind power to mitigate future crises and ensure a more stable and resilient energy future.
