First fatality from the “brain-eating amoeba” this year

A 36-year-old woman from Karachi has died from Naegleria fowleri, marking the city’s first fatality from the “brain-eating amoeba” this year.

The patient, who had no history of water-related activities, is believed to have contracted the infection through regular ablution (wuzu) at home.

With a fatality rate of 98%, Naegleria fowleri thrives in warm freshwater and can enter the body through the nose. Health officials urge caution and proper water treatment to prevent further cases.
